For DuPage County residents following the NFL, the Minnesota Vikings are the sole team with a perfect record after the Sunday slate of games. The Vikings defeated the Indianapolis Colts 16-10 on the road, a win that secured their position as the only undefeated squad in the league. The victory relied heavily on defensive performance rather than offensive production.
The Vikings’ defense limited the Colts to 218 total yards of offense. Quarterback Kyler Murray completed passes for 150 yards for Indianapolis. Minnesota’s offense managed 275 total yards, a modest output that head coach Kevin O’Connell said requires improvement as the schedule intensifies. O’Connell stated that the team must continue to progress given the quality of upcoming opponents and their goal to reach the end of the season strong.
The Vikings face a demanding stretch of games starting with a trip to Detroit to play the Lions. They will then host the Buffalo Bills before traveling to face the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers in consecutive weeks. The NFC North division is currently tight, with four teams holding winning records, meaning consistent offensive performance is necessary for Minnesota to maintain the division lead.
Other high-profile teams struggled to keep pace. The San Francisco 49ers, who entered Sunday with a 6-0 record, lost 29-20 to the Atlanta Falcons. The 49ers lost four turnovers and did not have their five top receivers available, including Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel Sr. Quarterback Brock Purdy threw two interceptions, one of which occurred with less than three minutes remaining and a six-point deficit.
Purdy said the team had good momentum and was moving the ball effectively before the costly mistakes shifted the game. He noted that protecting the football is the primary priority for the organization’s offense. The 49ers will have a bye week before hosting the Las Vegas Raiders on November 8.
The Kansas City Chiefs lost 20-3 to the Seattle Seahawks, dropping their record to 5-1. The Seahawks’ defense limited running back Kenneth Walker III to 36 rushing yards on 14 carries. Walker entered the game leading the NFL in rushing yards. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed 57.6% of his passes and failed to lead his team into the red zone for the first time in his career.
In another divisional contest, the Detroit Lions narrowly avoided a loss to the Green Bay Packers. Coach Dan Campbell gambled on a fourth-and-one play from his own 24-yard line with the game tied and under five minutes remaining. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs was stopped for a two-yard loss. The Packers took possession but could not score, and a blocked field goal attempt by the Packers allowed Detroit to kick the winning extra point.
